VANCOUVER - More than 20 years after topping the charts with hits like "Every Breath You Take" and "Don't Stand So Close to Me," the Police are set to kick off their hotly anticipated reunion tour in Vancouver tonight.

Singer Sting, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers, who parted ways in 1984, have been rehearsing since March.

They performed a private concert for their fan club last night at G-M Place.

Bloggers say the gig was heavily influenced by the jazz-tinged sound that Sting has favoured in recent years.

The singer has gone on to a hugely successful solo career since the Police broke up.

He reunited with his bandmates in 2003 when the Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The band then opened the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles earlier this year, paving the way for the reunion tour.

They are set to play a second gig in Vancouver on Wednesday night before moving on to Edmonton.
