VANCOUVER - Their laughter drowning out the buzz of five razors, the family of Canadian icon Terry Fox shaved their heads to raise money for cancer research.

Terry's mother Betty says the event was another in the family's longtime efforts to help fund a cure for cancer. Betty, Terry's father Rolly and his siblings Fred, Darrell and Judy had their locks shorn by Vancouver celebrities as the kickoff for the Great Canadian Head Shave, a one-day event that will see 1,000 Canadians shave their heads next weekend.

The event comes ahead of the annual Terry Fox run, a national fundraiser named after of Fox's legendary Marathon of Hope run across Canada after having his leg amputated because of bone cancer.

Betty says for Terry, the effects of cancer treatment that saw him lose his hair were more devastating than losing a limb.

She says she and her family are proud to be able to shave their heads in solidarity with all those still struggling with cancer.
