SYDNEY, N.S. - The Sydney Tar Ponds Agency has put out a tender call for construction of a protective cap over treated tar ponds sediment.

The project will allow the reclamation of 97 hectares of land for future green space development.

It is hoped that construction of the multi-layer cap can begin this fall with completion by the summer of 2013.

The cap includes a grading layer, a clay layer, a drainage layer, protective fill, topsoil and hydro seed.

The design will direct rain and groundwater into an engineered channel leading to the mouth of Sydney harbour.

The federal and Nova Scotia governments have committed $400 million to the cleanup of what has been described as one of Canada's worst industrial pollution sites.
