Police have charged a 19-year-old man with assault causing bodily harm after a 57-year-old man was critically injured when he attempted to stop a pumpkin theft at a Quebec grocery store.

The incident occurred last Thursday at an IGA grocery store in Gatineau.

Gatineau police said the injured man and his wife were on a bike ride when they saw a pair of teens allegedly stealing a pumpkin from the grocery store's parking lot.

When the 57-year-old man asked one of the young men to put the pumpkin back, there was an altercation in which the older man fell to the ground, striking his head.

The victim remains in critical condition.
