Homicide investigators are looking for suspects in a wild late-night shootout in north Toronto that left an 18-year-old man dead and five others injured.

The incident happened at about 10 p.m. on Friday at a playground behind a public townhouse complex at 87 Amaranth Crt., near Dufferin Street and Lawrence Avenue, in North York.

The deceased victim, who is Toronto's 11th homicide victim of the year, has been identified as Abdikarim Ahmed Abdikarim of Toronto. He was shot in the head and died after being taken to a hospital.

The five others wounded in the shootout are believed to be in their 20s and were taken to local hospitals. Three of the victims remained in hospital on Saturday afternoon with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Family members began arriving on the scene of the crime shortly after the gun blasts occurred, and officers cordoned off the area. Investigators have not said what led to the incident and have released few details.

A police source told CTV News the surviving victims have not been co-operative with detectives.

Some residents in the area, which has seen shootings and murders in the past, said they are frightened living there.

"There were shots fired a few nights ago but no one was hurt or anything," said Carla Brooks. "There are more shootings every year."

Witnesses said they saw a silver or grey four-door vehicle leave the scene. Police have not released any suspect descriptions.

Investigators are reviewing security footage from surveillance cameras in the area.
