Hundreds were at GuZoo in Three Hills on Sunday to protest the closure of the park, which was ordered by the province last week.

About 600 supporters signed a petition asking the province to reverse it's decision to close the facility.

Don Boles, one of the supporters, says there's only two reasons GuZoo exists. "It's Lynn's love of people and his love of animals. The animals are not treated unfairly here."

The province announced that they would be decommissioning the zoo after an independent review spurred allegations of lack of food and water for animals and a lack of safety for animals and guests.

The rally was organized soon after the decision was made.

Lacey Short, rally organizer, says that she wanted people to be able to show support. "I organized this so that everybody that supports the GuZoo could come out and show their support for the family but also get the government's awareness that there are people that support the GuZoo."

Petitions were on hand for people to sign so the province would change their minds. "I believe in GuZoo," Ken Dekoter said. "It's doing good things for the entire community. It's one of the largest attractions that we have in the Badlands."

Lynn Gustafson, owner of the park is still reeling from the government decision. "I was so upset about the whole thing. I referred to this as Communist Alberta. I don't want to talk to any of the Conservatives anymore. I've had it."

GuZoo came under intense scrutiny after an online social media blitz a month ago depicting injured animals living in filth and feeding off of animal carcasses.

Gustafson says he's the victim of a hidden political agenda. "Everyone in Alberta better beware, because our demise is just the first step. The government has made a gigantic move toward against people owning animals."

He says he's hoping the province will grant him an extension to give him time to approach surrounding communities about forming some sort of society to take over his operation.
