A strong earthquake hit off Taiwan's eastern coast on Thursday, shaking buildings in the capital Taipei.

There were no immediate reports of damages or civilian injury.

The Central Weather Bureau measured the strength of the quake at 6.2-magnitude.

The earthquake's epicentre was 62 kilometres southeast of the city of Chengkung - about 130 kilometres southeast of Taipei.

Quakes are common in Taiwan but most cause little or no damage.

However, in 1999, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed more than 2,300 people.

Last December, a 6.7-magnitude offshore tremor south of the city of Kaohsiung cut two underwater cables and disrupted telephone and Internet service for millions of customers throughout Asia.
