The Stanley Cup was showing its age a little more than usual Tuesday after the hallowed trophy fell off a table in Newfoundland and was left with a sizeable dent.
The cup was about to be flown by chopper from St. John's to Bonavista, the hometown of ex-Boston Bruin Michael Ryder, when the accident occurred.
As the Cup was sitting on a table during an outdoor event on a rooftop in St. John's, the table holding the trophy collapsed. The trophy's handlers were quick to get it off the ground, but the lip of the cup suffered a good-sized shiner.
Ryder, the second Newfoundlander to bring the cup to the province, recently signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Stars.
In 2008, Detroit's Dan Cleary brought the cup to the province.
Despite the dent, the cup was flown to Bonavista, a town about 100 kilometres to the north, for another event where Ryder met hockey fans and locals.
