American downhill skier Lindsey Vonn and professional golfer Tiger Woods broke the news Monday that they are in a relationship.

And they did it the way thousands of others do every day -- by announcing it on Facebook and Twitter.

"I guess it wasn't a well-kept secret but yes, I am dating Tiger Woods," Vonn, 28, said in a post on Facebook that she linked to on Twitter.

"Our relationship evolved from a friendship into something more over these past few months and it has made me very happy. I don't plan on addressing this further as I would like to keep that part of my life between us, my family and close friends. Thank you for understanding and your continued support! xo LV."

Woods struck a similar note in his own Facebook post.

"We want to continue our relationship, privately, as an ordinary couple and continue to compete as athletes," according to the status update on Woods' Facebook page Monday.

Both Woods and Vonn made the news public on Monday. Woods posted four pictures of the couple to his public Facebook page, while Vonn posted two. In the pictures, which appear to have been taken by a professional photographer, Woods is wearing a white Nike golf shirt while Vonn is wearing a teal Under Armour zip-up top.

Vonn, an Olympic gold medallist, finalized her divorce to her husband and former coach Thomas Vonn earlier this year.

Woods and his ex-wife, model Elin Nordegren, divorced in August 2010 following his widely-publicized cheating scandal. The couple have two children.

The rumour mill surrounding Woods' and Vonn's possible new romance started churning in February, when reports emerged that Vonn was spotted boarding Woods' private jet after a season-ending knee injury during a race in Austria.

TMZ.com ran a picture of a hooded blond on crutches -- apparently Vonn -- hobbling onto a private plane purportedly owned by Woods.

Then earlier this month, Vonn spent a weekend aboard Woods' private yacht dubbed "Privacy."
