TORONTO - When three-on-three overtime didn't work, the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs took part in the first shootout of the NHL season.

Mike Hoffman scored the winner in that shootout as the Senators came back from blowing a three-goal lead to defeat the Leafs 5-4 Saturday night at Air Canada Centre.

Ottawa (2-0-0) and Toronto (0-2-1) went to the first shootout in the NHL's 19th game, thanks to Craig Anderson making seven saves in overtime.

Kyle Turris, Alex Chiasson, Milan Michalek and Mark Stone scored in regulation for the Senators, who got 37 saves in total from Anderson. Reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson had three assists.

Joffrey Lupul, Tyler Bozak, Peter Holland and Daniel Winnik had the Leafs goals as they made good on their vow to be better after falling behind.

Toronto goaltender James Reimer, vying to replace Jonathan Bernier as the starter, stopped 29 of the 33 shots he faced.
