NEW YORK -- John Tortorella is out as head coach of the New York Rangers.

There is no immediate word on his replacement.

The firing comes just days after the Rangers lost their second-round playoff series to Boston in five games.

Tortorella spent just over four years as New York's head coach.

The Rangers were the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference after finishing with a 26-18-4 record.

Tortorella, who guided the Tampa Bay Lightning to a Stanley Cup win in 2004, ranks first on the NHL's all-time wins list among U.S.-born coaches with 410 career victories.
