RIO DE JANEIRO -- Canada's Eugenie Bouchard has advanced to the second round of the Rio Olympics tennis tournament after a straight-sets win over American Sloane Stephens.
Bouchard made quick work of Stephens -- ranked 22nd in the world -- winning the match 6-3, 6-3 in just one hour 12 minutes.
The Westmount, Que., native limited herself to just two unforced errors and was 3-for-7 on break point opportunities. Bouchard is ranked 39th in the world rankings, 17 places behind Stephens.
"I think she's a really good player," Bouchard said of her opponent. "I've known her since we were 12 years old, we shared the same coach for a while. So I know her well and I think she can have a really big game. I always thought since I was young that she would be really good."
The Canadian will next face either second-ranked Angelique Kerber of Germany of Colombia's Mariana Duque-Marino. Kerber and Duque-Marino are set to play on Sunday in their first round matchup.
Vancouver's Vasek Pospisil faced France's Gael Monfils in men's singles action later Saturday.
