COALDALE, Alta. - A sick cow that escaped from a veterinary clinic in Coaldale, Alta., was shot and killed by Lethbridge regional police officers after it charged at a cattle inspector.

The cow's escape on Wednesday morning also forced a lockdown of all schools in the community.

After wandering through town for a while, officers and members of the fire department were able to lure the cow onto private property and into an old cattle pen.

An inspector then tried to lead the cow to a more secure area, but he tripped and fell to the ground.

To keep him from being trampled by the aggressive animal, a police officer opened fire.

The cow fell, but then got up and was shot by two other officers on the scene.
