SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A gunman shot up a minivan full of Canadians driving into Jamaica's gang-ridden capital, police said Friday.

One of the tourists suffered minor injuries from flying glass.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding met with the six visitors from Quebec to apologize personally, and a military helicopter flew them back to the beach resort of Montego Bay, deputy police commissioner Mark Shields said.

"I think their motivation was to drive into downtown Kingston to look at another side of Jamaica," Shields said.

Jamaica has one of the world's highest murder rates, though the violence is concentrated in urban slums and rarely affects tourists.

Authorities said the shooting should serve as a reminder for foreign visitors to take precautions when venturing into unfamiliar areas.

"They went unaccompanied to a major city which has obvious inner-city problems with gangs," said Information Minister Daryl Vaz said. "Thank God it ended without any loss of life."

The Thursday afternoon shooting occurred in an area of west Kingston where thieves are known to assault vehicles stopped in traffic.

Shields said a bullet shattered a rear side window and a man inside was cut, but they managed to drive away and were not robbed.

Police are investigating whether the tourists -- four women and two men, none of whom were identified -- were caught in a crossfire or targeted for a robbery attempt.

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett said he and Golding will visit Canada next month to promote Jamaica as a destination and appease fears over violence.

Canada is Jamaica's second largest tourism market behind the U.S.
