TORONTO -- Technology company Garmin is experiencing a prolonged outage affecting its fitness tracking, aviation and commercial travel services, as well as its customer support network.

In a statement on its website, the company said it is “currently experiencing an outage that affects Garmin.com and Garmin Connect.”

The outage also impacts its call centres, meaning the company is unable to take any calls, emails or online chats.

“We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and apologize for this inconvenience,” Garmin wrote in the statement.

It is unclear if any customer data has been impacted.

CTVNews.ca contacted Garmin for a statement regarding the cause of the outage. A request for comment was not immediately returned.

Though the company has yet to provide a reason for the outage, Taiwanese tech news site iThome is reporting the outage may be caused by a ransomware attack. The website published an internal memo allegedly sent from Garmin’s IT staff to Taiwanese factories announcing that its services would undergo two days of maintenance on Friday and Saturday, which sources told the website was caused by a “virus”.

The outage has also affected Garmin’s aviation database services, flyGarmin, which supports aviation navigational equipment. Pilots that use the software may be forced to ground their aircraft until the app is back online.

The outage affects flyGarmin's position reporting functionality, flight plan filing, and weather reporting.

It is unclear whether the company's automotive and marine chart plotting services are affected by the outage.
