EDMONTON -- Something smells bad in Edmonton.

A unique corpse flower at the city's Muttart Conservatory bloomed overnight and is emitting a foul odour like rotting meat.

The bizarre stench is supposed to last only one day, so the facility is extending its visiting hours until 11 p.m.

The giant flower, more than two metres tall, is believed to be the first of its kind to bloom in Western Canada.

Staff have been keeping plant lovers updated on the flower's growth through Facebook and Twitter.

The most recent message encourages visitors to bring gas masks.
