Don’t miss the biggest supermoon of 2025. Here’s how Canadians can see it

The second of three supermoons in 2025 is set to take place this week.

Known as the “Beaver Moon,” the full moon that occurs in November is expected to be the biggest and brightest looking moon of the year.

Since the orbit of the moon around the Earth isn’t a perfect circle, it gets closer and further away as it moves around. According to NASA, a supermoon occurs when a full moon is closer to Earth in its orbit, making it look up to 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than the palest moon of 2025.

The moon will come within just under 222,000 miles (357,000 kilometres) of Earth, the closest supermoon of the year.

It’s named after the beaver because this particular supermoon happens at the time of year when the animal takes shelter in their lodges after gathering their supply of food for the winter.

According to the Almanac, the Beaver Moon will reach its peak illumination on Nov. 5 at 8:19 a.m. ET. Since it will be below the horizon at that point, the best way to see it in Canada will be on the evening of Nov. 4 and Nov. 5. No special equipment is needed to see the Beaver Moon, although the skies must be clear.

The first super moon of the year happened in October. The next one is expected to take place in December.

In September there was an eclipse blood moon, which is when a lunar eclipse happens when the Earth’s shadow covers up the full moon.
