St. Louis Bridge set to re-open

Saskatchewan's Ministry of Highways says the St. Louis Bridge will be closed for at least a week as they investigate damages.

Preparations are underway to re-open the St. Louis Bridge to traffic within the next few days.

Both lanes of the 100-year-old bridge, which runs through the town of St. Louis, south of Prince Albert, were closed Friday when a large crack in the road surface was discovered.

Engineers determined the crack was caused by corrosion of an expansion joint and the cold weather.

Crews will repair the northbound lane of the bridge first and temporarily re-open the southbound lane as soon as temporary traffic signals and signs are installed.

The northbound side will then re-open as crews shut down and repair the southbound lane.

The department of highways expects two-way traffic to resume within a week.

A new bridge through St. Louis is expected to open later this year.
