Saskatoon police had a busy month in June cracking down on crime within areas of increased criminal activity. As part of a high-visibility enforcement and crime disruption project conducted from June 10 to 21, officers made 176 arrests and 183 charges, following the execution of 220 outstanding warrants. Police say in addition to these arrests, they seized one real and four imitation firearms, 25 bladed weapons, 13 canisters of bear spray, four blunt weapons, $6,085 in currency, and various quantities of illicit substances, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and more. “This project is a proven example of how the right resources, in the right place, and at the right time can suppress crime in our community while removing violent offenders and dangerous weapons from our streets,” Saskatoon Police Chief Cam McBride said. “This balanced approach to community engagement and strategic enforcement through a city-wide safety plan is paramount to addressing violent crime in Saskatoon.” According to Statistics Canada’s annual crime severity index rate, Saskatoon is improving its ranking after three years of steady increase. The data shows Saskatoon saw a nine per cent decrease in its rate in 2024. Among major cities with populations of 100,000 people or more, Saskatoon is tied for seventh with Nanaimo on the crime severity index, with a rate of 106.7.
