Traffic restrictions on lanes heading into Saskatoon on Highway 11 remain in place following damage to the overpass after being hit by a semi Thursday afternoon. A semi with a trailer hauling heavy equipment collided with an overpass at the Circle Drive, Highway 11 and Highway 16 cloverleaf in the city’s southeast. All northbound and eastbound lanes were closed for several hours. No injuries were reported. Southbound and westbound lanes have reopened, but the latest update from the City says some larger vehicles are still being detoured, and drivers are encouraged to avoid the area if possible. In a release, the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) says the semi caused significant damage to the overpass. The extent of damage or cost of repairs is currently unknown. The City of Saskatoon says planning for repairs to the overpass is underway. “Due to the complexity and extent of the required work, a repair timeline is not available at this time,” the City said in a release. “Highway 16 eastbound will remain reduced to a single lane until repairs can be arranged and completed. Work is ongoing to safely remove loose concrete and address immediate safety concerns.” The City anticipates reopening Highway 11 northbound lanes beneath the structure by end of day Friday, provided the structure is confirmed to be safe. Drivers are asked to observe signs and detours in place. The City says traffic impacts and updates will be provided as they become available.
