A vigil was held Thursday at St. Thomas More College on the University of Saskatchewan campus to commemorate the Holodomor tragedy, also known as the Ukrainian famine. The University of Saskatchewan’s Ukrainian students Association hosted the vigil that remembers the famine between 1932 and 1933 orchestrated by the Stalin regime, impacting major grain-producing areas of the Soviet Union. The famine resulted in the deaths of millions of Ukrainians. The term Holodomor means ‘death by hunger’ or ‘extermination by hunger.’ Earlier this week an event was held at the Legislature of Saskatchewan to commemorate the tragedy. The events are part of Holodomor Memorial Week. International Holodomor Day is Nov. 22. The federal government recognized the Holodomor tragedy as a genocide in 2008.
