Two brothers and members of a Saskatchewan band were killed in a crash Thursday evening. On Oct. 9, at around 6 p.m., RCMP say a truck and an SUV collided on Highway 3, about two kilometres west of Melfort. The driver of the SUV died at the scene. The RCMP has identified him as a 59-year-old man from Kinistino, Sask. The truck’s driver, 31-year-old Seth Constant, was also pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 24-year-old Rene Constant, died later in hospital. The brothers were part of Constant Reminder, a family band formed with their other two brothers Cole and Ethan Constant. SaskMusic said the brothers’ passing is a major loss to the music community “These talented, hardworking and passionate musicians were an inspiration to many,” executive director of SaskMusic Lorena Kelly told CTV News. Gordon McKenzie, a fellow musician and longtime fan, remembers first seeing Constant Reminder perform in 2016. “They were trendsetters, in a way, because they were so young,” McKenzie said, noting their break-out when they were just teens. “What set them apart was how professional they were with everybody, and they were so personal. The guys were revolutionary in what they were able to bring.” The Constant brothers were members of James Smith Cree Nation, which released a statement saying the loss “is felt not only by their families but by all who knew them, heard them perform, and were moved by the gift of their music.” “Their songs celebrated resilience, family, and identity, values that are deeply rooted in who we are as Cree people,” James Smith Cree Nation wrote in a statement. “Their legacy will live on through their music and the memories they created for all of us.” RCMP have not released how the crash happened but say a collision reconstructionist is investigating.
