The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed wide receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker to a two-year extension. Schaffer-Baker will continue his career in Green and White through the 2027 season. The six foot, four inch receiver was selected in the fourth round, 30th overall of the 2020 Canadian Football League (CFL) draft. Labelled a “tenacious” receiver in the team’s announcement on Monday, Schaffer-Baker has played 57 career games as a Roughrider, registering 220 receptions for 2,865 yards and 14 touchdowns. In just five regular season games in 2025, Schaffer-Baker had 15 receptions for 177 yards, representing an average of 11.8 yards per catch. His presence was surely felt in the Western Final, where he caught a three yard touchdown pass on a third-down gamble to complete an eight-play, 64-yard march down the field. “Since joining the team, the 27-year-old has endeared himself to Rider Nation, not only for his relentless passion on the field but as someone who always has time for a genuine interaction or to sign an autograph,” the team said in its announcement, adding that Schaffer-Baker joined the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation as a player ambassador in 2024. The team also announced Monday that it had extended quarterback Jack Coan. Coan, who signed a one-year deal, remains in Green and White after initially joining the team in March of 2024. Over the next two seasons he suited up for 23 games and registered 12 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown but appeared in just five games for Saskatchewan in 2025. Previously, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL Draft. He attended camp with the Colts before joining the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas later that year. He went on to play eight games for the Brahmas, throwing for 1,403 yards and six touchdowns. Following the 2023 season, he had tryouts with the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks. Collegiately, Coan played his senior season at Notre Dame, after transferring from Wisconsin in the spring of 2021. He played 13 games for the Fighting Irish earning 3,150 yards, 25 touchdowns, an 11-2 record and a 2022 Fiesta Bowl appearance where he set the Fiesta Bowl records for passing yards (509) and passing touchdowns (5). When asked about its back-up quarterback situation last week, Riders’ vice president of football operations Jeremy O’Day said Coan is a player the team continues to see growth in. “He’s in a situation where he wants to grow from where he was the last two seasons,” O’Day said on Jan. 16. “He wants to have an opportunity to be a number two and to try and play.” Coan’s signing also brings further questions about last year’s back-up, Jake Maier, and his future with the club. “It’s a question to ask [Jake] because his thought process is, ‘Do I come back and be put in the same position? Or do I have an opportunity to go somewhere else where I feel like I might be able to start or play more this season?’” O’Day added. In a later announcement on Monday, the Riders also announced they signed defensive lineman Desmond Evans. Evans was signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL draft and played in three pre-season games. Prior to his NFL experience, Evans spent five collegiate seasons at the University of North Carolina, where he appeared in 55 games. During that time, he registered 124 defensive tackles including 21 for a loss, nine sacks, six pass deflections and two fumble recoveries.
