The Regina Pediatric Diabetes Program is facing staffing challenges, forcing some patients to access care in Saskatoon. In a statement to CTV News, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) said due to staffing-related challenges with the pediatric endocrinology programs, patients requiring the specialized services have been receiving care through a team of supporting physicians and specialists. “As this leave of absence has recently been extended, the SHA is undertaking more definitive planning to ensure continuity of care and services for these pediatric patients in Regina,” the statement read. As such, the SHA said they implemented a strategy to provide care for current patients in Regina. However, some patients may also need to access care in Saskatoon. “We recognize that this may create challenges for patients and families and are working to minimize any disruption to care,” the statement read, noting that the SHA is taking steps to strengthen the teams supporting the services. The SHA said it is also aware of a letter that had been sent to about 150 patients receiving services in Regina which said care would not be available in Regina, forcing all patients to seek care in Saskatoon. In its statement, the SHA said the letter contained incomplete information on plans for patient care. “We apologize for any confusion this may have caused,” the statement read. “The SHA will continue working with care teams, patients and families to determine the most appropriate care plan for each patient and will communicate directly with patients and families regarding any changes to their care.”
