Regina police have charged two young men with attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and several other crimes over a shooting incident last month that injured an 11-year-old girl. The incident happened Aug. 11 in Regina’s Eastview neighbourhood, when police were called to the 1000 block of Edgar St. just after 2 a.m. following a report of an 11-year-old girl suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The girl was inside a home in the area at the time of the shooting. After five weeks of investigation, police took two suspects into custody. During an update on Wednesday afternoon, Acting Chief Lorilee Davies said police believe the location was targeted. “For people in the community, I would reassure them that it is a safe neighbourhood, that there aren’t any ongoing safety concerns,” she said. Through speaking with residents and neighbours, investigators were able to determine that up to 20 shots were fired at the house. Davies reminded the public to provide any information that would help police in their investigation. “If people haven’t had an opportunity yet to review any video cameras, doorbell cameras, anything that they might have, we would ask them to do that,” she said. “Certainly, there’s the possibility that there are people who have knowledge of this crime who have not yet come forward.” When asked about the condition of the victim, Davies said the investigators are in touch with her family but does not have specific details about her injuries. “Our information is that she is continuing to recover,” she said. According to Davies, the investigation is complex, but police hope to have more details to share within the few weeks. “Our officers have literally put in hundreds of hours, reviewing videos, speaking to witnesses, gathering information, you know, judicial authorizations, all of that type of work that takes a lot of time,” Davies said. “Some of it is very tedious, as you can imagine, sifting through hours of video, looking for that one little piece that might help.” Anthony Nahbexie, 20, and Devon Nahbexie, 18, are both charged with attempted murder, reckless discharge of a firearm, conspiracy to commit murder and three other charges related to gun possession and stolen property. Devon Nahbexie is also charged with two counts of possessing a firearm contrary to a prohibition order. Both of the accused made their first court appearances Wednesday in Regina Provincial Court.
