Lieutenant Governor Molloy dies following battle with cancer

The life and legacy of Thomas Molloy Watch: Lieutenant Governor Thomas Molloy passed way Tuesday after a battle with cancer. Wayne Mantyka reports.

Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor, W. Thomas Molloy, passed away Tuesday morning after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

“Krista and I are saddened by the news of the passing of our Lieutenant Governor,” Premier Moe said in the press release. “On behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan and people of our province, I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Molloy’s family, and to the many that called him a friend. His Honour had a lasting impact on our province and nation in his five decades of dedicated service. His many contributions to the betterment of our country leaves a tremendous legacy that I hope provides his family with some comfort in this time of grief.”

Molloy stepped back from his duties on May 7.

He was installed at the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan on March 21, 2018. Molloy was admired for his reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and was respected as a lawyer, author and negotiator.

His work on the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and the Nisga’a Final Agreement led to his induction as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1996, and as a Member of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2012. He served as Chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan from 2001 to 2007.

Government House and the Legislative Building in Regina will have books of condolences available for the public to sign, as well as City Hall in Saskatoon.

Flags will be at half-mast on all Government of Saskatchewan buildings until sunset on the day of the funeral or memorial.

Arrangements for the service will be announced in the future.
