A death inquest for a man who passed away in a cell at the Regina Police Service (RPS) headquarters is slated to begin next month. Vincent Lee Tuckanow went into medical distress in a cell at RPS headquarters on Aug. 22, 2023. The 23-year-old was rushed to Regina General Hospital by paramedics, where he was later pronounced dead. The Coroners Act 1999 requires Saskatchewan’s chief coroner to hold an inquest into the death of any person who died while an inmate at a jail or correctional facility unless the death is found to be entirely due to natural causes. The purpose of a death inquest is to establish the facts of the incident, including the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths. The inquest is scheduled to be held from Monday, Sept. 21 to Sept. 25 at the Holiday Inn and Suites, 1800 Prince of Wales Drive. Coroner William Davern will preside over the inquest.
