Highway closures, collisions in parts of Sask. as another round of winter weather hits

Parts of central and southern Saskatchewan are experiencing highway closures and collisions due to another round of winter conditions on Saturday.

According to an update from RCMP, ice, snow-covered lanes, drifting and blowing snow, road closures or detours, as well as strong winds, are impacting road conditions.

Just after 10 a.m. RCMP responded to a collision on Highway 1, west of Belle Plaine, noting that there are several other traffic-related incidents and highway closures in the south-central part of the province.

RCMP advises drivers to check Highway Hotline for road conditions before venturing out and to delay travel if roads are bad.

If travel is necessary, RCMP say to stay on roads that have recently received maintenance.

As of 10:30 a.m., the highway from Regina to Moose Jaw is closed due to ice. The Regina Bypass is covered with slush and ice, with several other areas facing the same conditions.

As road closures are rapidly changing, residents can visit Highway Hotline for the latest updates.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) had also issued a freezing rain warning for parts of southern Saskatchewan. A warning for Regina and Saskatoon has since been lifted.

The Regina Police Service posted a travel advisory for icy road conditions on portions of Lewvan Drive and Ring Road on Saturday just before 4:30 p.m., citing a combination of freezing rain and wind.

Since 9 a.m., police responded to 12 collisions, including two rollovers. Police said no serious injuries were reported.
