Annual service of remembrance held at Sask. legislature

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall, Lt.-Gov Vaughn Schofield and Speaker Dan D'Autremont take part in the annual service of remembrance for the public service Wednesday at the provincial legislature.

A service was held Wednesday at the Saskatchewan legislature to remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

Premier Brad Wall laid a wreath at the Saskatchewan War Memorial as part of the annual service of remembrance for the public service.

"Today we gather as a public service and as a province to remember the deeds of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, so we may live in a land that knows peace and prosperity," Wall said.

"It is so very important to stop and reflect on those men and women who have and continue to give so much."

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Dieppe, which is considered one of the darkest chapters in Canadian military history.

Roughly 5,000 Canadian soldiers fought in the battle, including members of the South Saskatchewan Regiment.

More than half of the soldiers involved in the raid were killed, wounded or taken prisoner by Axis forces.
