The Quebec government might impose restrictions to stop the proliferation of blue green algae in many of the province's lakes and rivers.

Environment Minister Line Beauchamp says the restrictions could target agricultural activities, while the government might also install septic tanks and set up buffer zones on river or lake shores.

She said at a news conference in Quebec City today that any action taken by her government would need a wide consensus because there's more than one cause for the algae.

The environment minister also announced that Premier Jean Charest will hold a meeting with experts at the end of September to come up with a plan to fight its spread.

Beauchamp also wants to launch an information campaign to better inform the public about the problem.
