TORONTO - Porter Airlines says it is revamping its schedule of flights to Newark, N.J., following a request to reduce its weekday service to the city.

U.S. aviation officials said Toronto-based Porter must cut four of 14 daily trips to Newark to reduce congestion and delays at the U.S. airport.

Porter says as of June 20, it will offer six return weekday flights, three on Saturday and five on Sunday for a total of 38 flights per week instead of the current 40.

The airline says the reallocation is in conjunction with the Federal Aviation Administration to reduce flight congestion in the New York area.

Porter earlier said the free market should dictate the level of service, fares and competition in the U.S.-Canada markets.

Porter, which started in late 2006 with a route from Toronto and Ottawa, added the Newark service in March.
