Conservative leadership candidate Lisa Raitt is opening up about her views on abortion, suggesting she is opposed to it but wouldn't legislate limits.

In an interview with Don Martin, host of CTV's Power Play, Raitt referred to her family history and said it's a tough decision for any woman.

"My mother had me and was going to give me up for adoption. She chose not to have an abortion, so I have some really personal views about it," Raitt said.

"I think it's a decision that is a tough decision for any woman to make, but I would never bring in legislation to make it illegal, ever."

Candidates in the Conservative leadership race hold a range of views on social issues, with several saying they're personally opposed to abortion but unwilling to reopen the debate. That echoes the party's position under former prime minister Stephen Harper.

Among the leadership contestants, Saskatchewan MP Brad Trost and former Ontario MP Pierre Lemieux have both raised the issue of sex-selective abortion. Trost has also spoken openly about his opposition to same-sex marriage, which has been legal in Canada for a decade.
