Prime Minister Stephen Harper is set to announce new counter-terrorism measures aimed at preventing Islamic State militants from spilling into Jordan, CTV News has learned.

Harper will announce the new measures when he hosts Jordanian King Abdullah II, who is visiting Ottawa on Wednesday.

Sources say Canada will provide:

  • Enhanced monitoring equipment to detect multiple passports and identification fraud
  • Canadian special forces training to spot improvised explosive devices (IEDs) over the next two years
  • Biological and chemical warfare training

Harper is also expected to provide additional humanitarian aid for Syrian refugee camps. When he visited Jordan last year, the Prime Minister pledged $105 million to help the country cope with its influx of refugees.

Jordan, a country of eight million, is currently hosting to an estimated 625,000 Syrian refugees.

Last year, Canadian special forces spent two months bolstering Jordan’s military in case the civil war in Syria expanded into a regional conflict.

Canada has also spent $5 million to buy armoured vehicles for the Jordanian armed forces.
