Police in New Brunswick searched the home of the son of slain businessman Richard Oland on Thursday.

The search warrant was executed at a home in the Saint John suburb of Rothesay, Sgt. Glenn Hayward of Saint John police said.

Sources have told CTV Atlantic the home at 58 Gondola Point Road belongs to Oland's son, Dennis.

There were at least four police vehicles parked on the property. Police could be seen removing several garbage bags on the property.

Saint John police Chief Bill Reid said earlier this week that investigators believe that Oland, 69, was killed by someone he knew.

Oland's body was found in his office in Saint John last Thursday. The Toronto Star has quoted an unnamed source saying Oland was bludgeoned to death with an axe.

Saint John police would neither confirm nor deny that report.

Richard Oland belonged to the family that owns Moosehead Breweries Ltd, but he left the family business about 20 years ago. His older brother, Derek Oland, is the company's executive chairman.

After leaving the brewery, Oland served as the director of several firms, oversaw the board of the 1985 Summer Games in Saint John, and worked in the trucking business.

Oland was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada in 1998.

More than 400 people packed into a small chapel near Saint John to pay their respects at his funeral.

Provincial MLA Victor Boudreau said that Oland's death is a loss for the greater community.

"I think he needs to be respected and remembered for all the great contributions he's brought to the community and the greater Saint John area," he said.
