OTTAWA - There's a flock of 50 pink, plastic flamingos gracing the lawn of the prime minister's residence this morning.

Stephen Harper's staff thought this would be the way to mark his 50th birthday.

As Harper left the residence to see his children off to school he was greeted by his staffers singing "Happy Birthday."

He strolled briefly through the flock and posed for a photo beside a sign reading: "Happy 50th birthday! Prime Minister."

Just before he walked out, some of his people joked that the birds were a surprise and if he disliked it, they might be looking for new jobs.

But Harper seemed to appreciate the gesture and offered a quick thank you before heading back inside 24 Sussex Dr.
