Here's a look at some famous Canadians that were cast members and hosts of Saturday Night Live. Barrie, Ontario's Veronika Slowikowska is the latest Canadian to be cast in the iconic show.
Veronika Slowikowska The Barrie, Ontario native will be one of five new cast members joining the iconic sketch comedy show in its 51st season.
Slowikowska has gained attention for her viral sketch comedy videos on TikTok and Instagram, and for her recurring role on FX comedy ‘What We Do in the Shadows.’

Dan Aykroyd Born in Ottawa, Aykroyd was originally hired as a writer for SNL but became a cast member by the debut, and was on the show from 1975-1979.

Martin Short Short was born in Hamilton, Ontario and attended McMaster University. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2019. He was a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1984-1985.

Phil Hartman The Brantford, Ontario native was an SNL cast member from 1986 to 1994, and was known for his many impressions from Ronald Reagan, Phil Donahue and Bill Clinton.

Norm MacDonald The actor, writer and standup comedian was born in Quebec City and moved to Ottawa as a teenager. He was a SNL cast member from 1993-1998.

Mike Myers Mike Myers was born in Scarborough, Ontario, and appeared on several Canadian before becoming an SNL cast member from 1989-1995. Some of Myers’ famous roles include Wayne Campbell from “Wayne’s World” and Dieter on Sprockets.

Margot Kidder Kidder was born in Yellowknife, N.W.T. and she famously played Lois Lane in the 1978 ‘Superman’ film.

Catherine O’Hara O’Hara grew up in Toronto, and was an SNL cast member for one week before she quit to continue her work on SCTV. She never filmed an episode. O’Hara hosted SNL on April 13, 1991 and on October 31, 1992.

John Candy (host) John Candy was born in Newmarket, Ontario and grew up in Toronto. The actor hosted SNL on October 22, 1983.

Leslie Nielsen (host) Nielsen was born in Regina, lived in the Northwest Territories and Edmonton as a child, and later studied in Toronto. The actor hosted SNL on February 18, 1989.

Wayne Gretzky (host) The hockey legend was born in Brantford, Ontario and played for the Indianapolis Racers, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers.

Michael J. Fox (host) Actor Michael J. Fox hosted Saturday Night Live on March 16, 1991, where David Spade impersonated him in a ‘Back to the Future’ skit. Fox was born in Edmonton and then his family settled in Burnaby, B.C.
