SEATTLE - The man who skipped Canada's wheelchair curling team to a gold medal at the 2010 Olympics has pleaded guilty in Seattle to drug-related charges.
Jim Armstrong of Richmond, B.C. and his son, Gregory, pleaded guilty to selling and dispensing counterfeit drugs with intent to mislead or defraud.
The guilty plea, and a sentencing date of Jan. 28, 2011, were announced last week by the U.S. Attorney's office for the Western District of Washington.
Armstrong, who is 59, was accused of trying to smuggle 2,544 counterfeit Viagra pills and 260 Cialis pills from China and India into Canada.
The champion curler, who is also a former dentist, was arrested April 15 in Blaine, Wash., where U.S. prosecutors say he was picking up the pills from a postal box.
Under terms of a plea agreement, prosecutors recommend Amstrong pay a $50,000 fine, perform community service and be sentenced to time already served. Prosecutors also recommend a sentence of a year and a day in prison for his 28-year-old son, but the judge is not bound by those recommendations.
