Ottawa police are investigating the murder of an 82-year-old woman at a retirement home in suburban Barrhaven.

The victim has been identified as Doreen Flann.

Police are not revealing how she was killed, nor are they revealing the identity of the 82-year-old man they have in custody.

But local newspaper reports say Flann died of injuries suffered in a stabbing and that her husband, Ian Flann, is the man in custody.

According to Ottawa paramedics, emergency crews were called to the Longfields Manor shortly before noon on Monday to respond to reports that an elderly man and woman had suffered serious injuries.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to hospital for treatment.

The Flanns had moved into Longfields Manor this past summer.

The Ottawa police major crimes unit is investigating the death, along with a forensics unit.

So far, no charges have been laid.

"The investigation is in its infancy, we're putting facts together and interviewing witnesses and family members," Sgt. David Veinotte of the Ottawa Police said on Tuesday.

Longfields Manor is a long-term care facility in the city's southwest end that provides 24-hour care to people who can no longer take care of themselves or use assisted living.

"We are deeply saddened that a resident has passed away under unexpected circumstances…we are fully co-operating with the police and the Ministry of Health investigations," the executive director of the manor said in a statement on Tuesday.

Vicki Aubin, whose uncle is a resident of Longfields, said that it was a shock to hear of the murder.

"You wonder how safe it is for people who don't have any defense of their own," she told CTV Ottawa.
