OTTAWA - Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea says she's disappointed that a European Union ban on imported seal products will continue pending further legal action.

Shea said in Ottawa today that the European Court of Justice has ruled that the ban will be upheld pending the outcome of the hearing of a case that includes the Inuit seal industry.

The Inuit and others claim the ban is both illegal and immoral.

Shea also says the federal government will continue to pursue the matter through the World Trade Organization because Ottawa feels the EU ban violates international trade laws.

The EU ban exempts the trade in seal products from aboriginal groups, but the Inuit believe their markets will plummet along with the rest of the commercial industry under the ban.
