LONDON, Ont. - Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino called it a "very tragic day" for the force.

He commented after a crash Monday which killed a rookie officer and left another in hospital in serious but stable condition. Const. Allan Hack was one of two officers in a cruiser that crashed near Rodney, Ont., about midway between St. Thomas and Chatham.

The cruiser hit an asphalt truck and the province's Special Investigations unit has taken over the investigation.

Hack, who was 31 and recently hired as a full-time officer out of the Elgin County detachment, died of his injuries in hospital.

The second officer, 35-year-old Lynn Neale, is in a London hospital and Sgt. Dave Recktor said she is in serious but stable condition.

Late Monday, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty offered his condolences to Hack's fiancee, family and friends.
