HALIFAX - n outbreak of the mumps in Nova Scotia has public health officials warning of a spread to other provinces as university students start heading home for the summer.
As of today, the department is investigating 157 cases of mumps across Nova Scotia. Most of them are in the Halifax area.
However, Melissa MacKinnon, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health, says cases are also appearing on the province's south shore, in Lunenburg and Queens counties.
There are also two cases in the Shelburne, Yarmouth and Digby areas.
The department website says symptoms include fever, swollen and tender glands at angle of the jaw, headache and muscle aches.
