On this edition of Ask an Expert, Cambrian College professor Julien Lavictoire explains how heat pumps work. He says they reverse an air conditioner to draw outdoor heat inside. Lavictoire adds they cost about the same as an AC unit and can also save up to 50% compared with electric heating. However, he says you still need a backup furnace in sub-zero cold.
