Two charged after $600K drug bust on Hwy. 11-17

Two people are facing charges after the Ontario Provincial Police seized an estimated $600,000 worth of suspected cocaine and methamphetamine during a traffic stop in northwestern Ontario last week.

OPP conducted the stop on a vehicle along Highway 11-17 in the Municipality of Shuniah at about 6 p.m. on Nov. 20.

Provincial police said the canine unit was called to the scene to assist.

“After a thorough search of the vehicle, officers located a large quantity of what appeared to be methamphetamine and cocaine, Canadian currency and paraphernalia related to drug trafficking,” OPP said in a news release Monday.

Investigators reported seizing approximately five kilograms of suspected cocaine, 816 grams of suspected methamphetamine and $860 in cash along with the vehicle itself.

As a result of the investigation, a 59-year-old man from Etobicoke and a 59-year-old woman from Cookstown were each charged with four drug trafficking offences.

Both accused were held for a bail hearing and were subsequently remanded into custody at the Thunder Bay District Jail.
