The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) has launched the first phase of operations at its new Division 2 location in the downtown core. Starting Monday, a newly formed Patrol Services Unit – comprising four constables and a sergeant – will operate out of 180 Brock Street. Officers will conduct bicycle and foot patrols, engage in community outreach, and focus on crime prevention and addressing downtown safety concerns. “This has been a long time coming, and we’re proud to see it finally taking shape,” said interim police chief Brent Duguay in a news release. “Launching Division 2 is a significant step forward in enhancing our police presence downtown and strengthening relationships with the people who live, work, and visit here. We’re excited to get started and continue building a safer, more connected community.” Making downtown safer Community members can expect increased visibility during summer events and daily operations. “We’re here to be a real part of the downtown community,” said Sergeant Derek MacFarlane. “That means checking in with businesses, walking the beat, and dealing with the tough stuff too – like helping people in crisis, or stepping in when public spaces aren’t being used safely. If you see us around, say hello. We’re here to enhance trust, keep people safe, and look out for everyone downtown.” Members of the police service’s traffic services division, the canine unit, and its Central Support Bureau – including a sergeant, a community safety officer and the high school liaison officer – will also operate from the location. Sault police said a staff sergeant will oversee all personnel working out of the Division 2 location. Expansion planned Future plans include partnering with local agencies such as the collision reporting centre, Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District, and Victim Services of Algoma, to bring them into the Division 2 building to further improve downtown safety and services. New location not yet open to the public While officers have begun working at Division 2, the building is not yet open to the public. A grand opening will be announced at a later date. The SSMPS thanked the community for its patience and support during the transition.
