OPP stop two stunt drivers on same northern highway within minutes

Ontario Provincial Police in West Parry Sound laid two stunt driving charges within minutes of each other after stopping vehicles for excessive speed on Highway 69 last weekend.

On Sunday at about 2:10 p.m., OPP officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle they say was travelling 151 km/h in a posted 110 km/h zone on Highway 69 near Henvey Inlet.

“The vehicle was also determined to be uninsured,” OPP said in a related social media post.

As a result of the investigation, the driver, a 20-year-old person from Sudbury was charged with stunt driving, driving with an obstructed plate and driving a motor vehicle with no currently valid permit. The passenger and owner of the vehicle was also charged with permitting a motor vehicle to be operated without insurance.

Second vehicle passes initial traffic stop

Minutes later, officers said they stopped another vehicle travelling 168 km/h in the same posted 110 km/h zone on Highway 69 after it passed the initial traffic stop.

“(The vehicle) came into close proximity to an officer outside of the stopped vehicle,” said police.

As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old person also from Sudbury was charged with stunt driving, careless driving and failing to slow down or move over for an emergency vehicle.

Licences suspended, vehicles impounded

Both drivers were issued 30-day licence suspensions and both vehicles were impounded for 14 days.

All accused were issued provincial offence summons and are scheduled to appear in court in Parry Sound on March 17.

Police issue public safety reminders

“OPP remind motorists that excessive speed significantly increases the risk of serious collisions,” said police.

“Drivers must slow down and move over, where safe to do so, when approaching stopped emergency vehicles,” added OPP Const. Brandon Charlebois.
