Northern Ontario family thanks ‘Hope Air’ on its 40th anniversary

As Hope Air marks its 40th anniversary, a Cochrane family recounts their teen’s cancer journey and how it was eased by the organization's flights, rides & meals

When a Cochrane family faced a cancer diagnosis, help came from strangers determined to make a difference.

Now, as Hope Air celebrates its 40th anniversary, the Lalonde family is sharing how the organization helped carry them through one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

Diamond Lalonde was just 15 years old when she was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2024.

To access treatment, Diamond and her family relocated to Toronto for five months. During that time, Ronald McDonald House Charities provided accommodations for the family while Diamond underwent treatment.

Eventually, Diamond rang the bell to mark the end of her cancer treatment. But the trips to Toronto didn’t end there. Diamond still needed follow-up appointments.

That was when the Lalondes learned about Hope Air, a Canadian charity that helps patients travel for medical care by covering flights, accommodations, ground transportation and meal vouchers.

“We thought we were going to be flying commercially, and that was amazing for us,” said Tracey Lalonde, Diamond’s mother.

“Then I get a text message from a pilot saying, ‘Where do you want to be picked up?’ I looked at Diamond and said, ‘The airport.’ It honestly felt like they were rolling out the red carpet.”

Tracey said the support went far beyond transportation.

“They paid for our accommodations, gave us money for rides and food,” she said.

“We came to Toronto on our first trip and didn’t have to worry about a thing except her.”

Hope Air CEO Mark Rubinstein said the organization’s 40th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on its impact and the ongoing need for its services.

“Primarily, it’s funding from the private sector -- generous corporations, individuals and foundations,” Rubinstein said.

“If we can find a partnership with the Government of Ontario, it will allow us to create more awareness for the work of Hope Air and reach more families who need help.”

Rubinstein said more than 3,000 patients across northern Ontario received help from Hope Air last year.

Officials with Timmins and District Hospital said 117 patients in its region received support from the organization.

“We’re so beyond grateful,” said Diamond.

“It’s truly been our saving grace. It lifted that financial burden off my mom’s shoulders so much,” said Diamond.

She added that she keeps in touch with her first pilot.

Hope Air officials said missed or delayed medical appointments dropped by 77 per cent among patients who received the charity’s support last year.
