Nine students from Cambrian College in Sudbury are recipients of the Schulich Builders Scholarships for Skilled Trades, one of the largest skilled trades scholarship programs in Canada.

The scholarships support students entering skilled trades with tuition, tools and living expenses, with $40,000 awarded for two-year programs and $20,000 awarded for one-year programs, the college said in a news release.

Paige West of Rosseau in the Muskoka region, Zachary Rice of Greater Sudbury and Cameron Doucet of Val Caron received two-year scholarships.

Four carpentry program students received one-year scholarships, including Danila Roy of Greater Sudbury, Laydon Bursey of Whitefish, Lauren Comeau of Val Caron and Kayla Doyle of Kapuskasing.

” I have always liked working with my hands and creating something new, which is what got me interested in trades,” said Doyle in the news release.

“This scholarship means a lot as it showed me that others believe in my capabilities, which will only make me work harder to achieve my goals in the near future.”

“For northern Ontario, this support helps ensure we are preparing the skilled trades workforce our economy and communities need to thrive, said Kim Crane, Cambrian’s dean of skilled trades, engineering technology and environmental studies.

The Schulich Foundation created the program to address Canada’s skilled labour shortage and to highlight the essential role of trades in building and maintaining vital infrastructure.
