Moose shot, left to waste near Timmins

The MNR seeks tips on a cow moose illegally killed and wasted near Timmins between Sept. 28-30.

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources is investigating after a cow moose was shot and left to waste in a wooded area south of Timmins, Ont., late last month.

The moose was discovered by conservation officers on the morning of Sept. 30 in a forestry cut just south of the Scott Lakes Cottages, approximately 50 meters from Pine Street South near the 37-kilometre marker.

Ministry officials said the animal was shot with a .243 WIN calibre rifle.

The MNR recovered a casing and a live round that were found on the road

“(The animal is) believed to have been shot from the roadway,” said Bill McCord, the MNR’s enforcement manager for the Timmins and Kirkland Lake area, in an email to CTV News on Tuesday.

The incident is believed to have occurred between the evening of Sept. 28 and the early morning hours of Sept. 29, according to the MNR.

“Suspects took deliberate steps to hide the carcass by placing logs over it,” said McCord.

Authorities seek dash cam footage

“Some parts were taken, but much of the moose was left behind,” said Cochrane District Crime Stoppers in a related social media post.

The investigation into the illegal moose kill is ongoing.

MNR conservation officers are seeking the public’s help with investigators asking anyone with dash cam footage from Pine Street South during the time of the incident to come forward.
