A woman in Kirkland Lake says she was able to lock the doors of her vehicle in the nick of time on Thursday to prevent a woman from snatching her 5-and-a-half-month-old baby. The incident took place just after noon outside a store in the community, the woman said in response to written questions from CTV News. She has asked us not to reveal her name. “Me and my children were at the store and I (saw) this woman walking,” she said. “Something about her stood out to me. I watched her watch me. I told my oldest (child) to get in the truck and close the door as I put my baby in the car seat. I shut the door and locked it.” Just as the locks clicked shut in her truck, she said the woman tried to open the doors and began yelling at her. “She came up to my truck and started yelling at me, saying I stole her baby and to give her back,” the mother said. “She tried opening the door to get my baby out of my truck. I kept pressing the lock button out of sheer panic and yelling for her to get away from my babies.” Luckily, she said, bystanders came to her aid and the woman eventually walked away from the truck. Police were called and found the woman, and had a difficult time taking her into custody. Ontario Provincial Police confirmed Friday that a 38-year-old woman has been charged in connection with the incident. Hopefully ‘she can get help’ “Hopefully she can get the help she needs now,” the mother said. While sympathetic to the woman’s plight, the mother told us the incident affected her deeply, adding she couldn’t believe it was actually happening. “If my keys weren’t in my hands, I wouldn’t have been able to lock it as fast (and) she might have been able to grab my baby and run with her,” she said. “Anything can happen in the blink of an eye and it’s best to always be ready. I learned that Thursday for sure … I never thought this would happen to me. It’s the type of stuff you see in TV shows and movies.” Now that she and her family are safe, the mother said she hopes the person involved in the case will get help. “At the end of the day, I have my children safe and sound in my arms,” she said. “And I hope she can get the help she needs.”
