‘If you’re planning to break the law, maybe stick to just one’: OPP after Hwy. 17 traffic stop

A 50-year-old man from Ignace, Ont., is facing multiple charges following a traffic stop on Highway 17 West last month.

Ontario Provincial Police said the driver was clocked going 32 km/h over the speed limit in an 80km/h zone.

OPP regional media and communications advisor Erin McCrea confirmed, in an email to CTV News on Monday, that the stop took place at about 10:30 p.m. May 26 in Melgund Township near Borup Corners.

Stop leads to further charges, penalties

“Pro tip: ‘If you’re planning to break the law, maybe stick to just one,’” OPP said in a social media post detailing the incident.

“Things got worse when the insurance slip turned out to be expired and the vehicle wasn’t insured at all.”

As a result, the motorist was charged with speeding and driving without insurance.

In addition to the charges, the vehicle was impounded as a result of the traffic stop until properly insured.

“The driver left with more paperwork than they arrived with,” OPP said, including multiple summonses for an upcoming traffic court date and impound details.
